We've had the S9 for over 5 years now. The customer service is pretty good when you have a maintenance question. Makes the most of a good coffee bean by ensuring you get a hot espresso with a lot of real crema. Use strong non-oily beans for the best coffee in the world. Brands I have used include Intelligentsia, Lutz, Kimbo, Lavazza, and other good espresso beans. What I really like about this machine is you can make other coffee (in addition to the beans you have loaded in the machine). It has a one button function to override the beans you already have loaded and lets you add grounds to a compartment at the front of the machine. For example, I have Dunkin Donuts decaf grounds on hand for folks that want a decaf coffee. I also have decaf espresso grounds.

Keep up with the maintenance on this machine and it will take care of you. It's pricey, so just keep up with the maintenance to get your money's worth. The machine will let you know when it's time to change the water filter, clean using the tablets, and de-calcify.

After having a coffee from this machine, we never go to Starbucks or any other coffee shop for coffee. There stuff will not compete. Maybe over 5 years, we broke even on this machine by the $$ we saved by not spending 4-5 bucks on double lattes. Good luck with your choice.

I received this machine as a gift for Christmas just a couple weeks ago, and then I got worried when I read the reviews online. The first time I used it I was afraid it wouldn't work correctly and I would have to lie to the person who gave it to me and say that it was great. So I was VERY careful to follow all of the instructions, hoping that I would somehow prove the negative reviews wrong...

Either there is a WIDE variance in the quality of individual machines, or those who are leaving the negative reviews aren't using the machine properly. I even waited a few weeks to leave a review, in case the machine blew up on me after a few uses. But now that I've made a dozen excellent cappuccinos, I feel safe leaving a positive review. My guess is that many of the people who have the machine blow up on them are not properly releasing the excess steam. This takes a little while, standing holding a pitcher of cold water underneath the steam nozzle, and it's kind of annoying to wait there for a few minutes, but it releases all of the steam safely. The instruction manual says to froth the milk first, so I've been doing that, and then when I switch the knob to the coffee setting, the espresso comes right out.

I really have no complaints with my cappuccino maker. It would be nice if I didn't have to hold the frothing pitcher while the machine "de-steams," but that's been my only complaint. My cappuccinos have been great, and I'm getting better at frothing the milk and gauging how much water to put in the tank so that I only have to de-steam for 2 minutes, instead of 5. I'd give it 4 1/2 stars, but that wasn't an option. So I rounded down so it wouldn't seem like I was inflating my rating to counteract the low scores.

I received this as a Chirstmas gift, I could not fathom spending this amount of money on something for myself. At any rate, I love coffee, espresso and all other coffee flavored drinks so trust me when I say,
"this was a wonderful surprise" for a true coffee lover. In the long run, not only was I worth the price, but it has actually paid for itself with the money I have now saved not going to coffee houses, @ .00 and up per cup, and for a much better cup than those they were selling. This is definitely for the coffee lover, not occassional drinker, who has everything else. Oh! space helps too, it not a small item. Extremely well packaged, dependable, and sturdy. FYI. I waited a year and a half before leaving this review, I received it Dec.25, 2008. Used everyday, multiple times per. The filters are a bit expensive but you get a good length of time on them, the can be purchased cheaper online and in bulk.

( We have used stovetop espresso makers for years & this one trumps all i've come across. The aluminum ones end up looking crummy in no time, plus you really don't want aluminum in your body if you can help it & coffee is a known acidic. And the stainless steel on this one, is not a flimsy layer that's going to wear off. In fact, i just sent this to my daughter for her birthday. She loves to entertain and this makes a lovely impression whether for one or for guests. You definitely won't want to hide this away. )

This product is apparently made by a Canadian company but IN China according to the literature that accompanies it - which speaks Volumes for company oversight in terms of quality control & definitely not the usual made in China purchase you wish you'd passed by.

To all the coffee giant Starbucks Coffee known as Total, made a huge impact on our lives, from the way we drink our coffee to the type of coffee we choose. In 1980 Zev Siegl wanted his chance to look elsewhere. Until that time, Starbucks coffee was the largest roaster in Washington with six different shops. I like everything about this machine except the frother. It seems to pop off no matter how careful I am so if you're wanting to use this part of the machine, be warned. The dial to turn off the frother is right above the frother so if it has popped off, you might have a problem turning it off since now the steam is coming out close to it. I turned it off with the power button. I have tried to be careful and turn the dial slowly so the pressure would not pop it off but that doesn't always work. I've also tried to make sure the cup was lower down since if you have it too close to the bottom of the cup it will pop off. I must not be talented enough since it continues to pop off even when I'm trying to be very careful. I hate to return this since I really like everything else about it. It's easy to use and makes a good cup of coffee and adjustable so I can have my coffee strong and my daughter can have her's weak. My son wants double coffee, no milk. It's a wonderful machine in all other aspects. You can adjust for water hardness and program it for an "energy saver" mode. It's also quieter than the last one I had. Overall, a great machine.

This works VERY well to make a strong coffee that is more intense than that from any drip or press coffee maker but not so powerful as a big high pressure espresso machine in a cafe. Somewhere in between - but quite nice and inexpensive for the home. Cleans up easily. These are made in India (probably by guys sitting with hammers on the sidwalk) so may vary a bit sample to sample.

The only problem is the rubber seal ring - this gradually wears out and if you don't find an original Bialetti replacement, it can leak steam no matter how hard you gorilla down the threads.

It was easily going to be 10 times more money than we had ever considered spending on a coffee machine before. We did our research, read reviews, etc. This seemed like the best bet, except for all of these people who say it broke right away, and Saeco customer service is a problem. This was a scary thing.

We decided to investigate how hard it would actually be to get it fixed if we should need to. From the Saeco website we found out that the official repair center for Illinois is only a few miles from us in Chicago. (first good sign) I had read that it is impossible to get parts from Saeco, so I called to ask about this. The woman on the phone explained that they repair a variety of machines. She was super nice, totally willing to answer all of my questions, and she spend a good 15 minutes on the phone with me knowing that I didn't even own a machine yet. (2nd good sign)

She told me that they do see a lot of these machines in for repair, but that in general, automatic one touch machines of any brand break all the time, regardless of how expensive they are. She also reiterated several times, that there's no problem that can't be fixed quickly, usually inexpensively if it isn't warenteed anymore.

We then talked to several stores about their return policies. After quite some prodding, Bed Bath and Beyond told us that it's not their official policy to let their customers know this, but it IS their official policy to accept any returns no matter the age or condition of the product. They actually said we could bring it in five years later with no box, and they would exchange it if we are unhappy, as 'customer unhappiness' is their criteria for return eligibility. We bought it with one of their 20% off coupons.

Since then we have performed all suggested maintenance, and never had to bring it in for anything. We are totally in love with this machine. It was one of the best purchasing decisions we have ever made. I know several people/places with more expensive automatic one touch machines, and our coffee at home is better than all of them. (could just be a 'what we're used to' bias) Buy this machine. Take care of it. Love it as you would a child. Don't worry about it breaking down. It hasn't for us yet, and if it ever does, I will amend this review.

I purchased this machine about 4 months ago, and it has been nothing but great!

I have never owned a machine like this before, and I had the usual "get over the hump of the learning curve" sorts of problems at first(even though the machine is fairly easy to use), but now I LOVE IT!

Now that I have learned the proper maintenance routine (it is just a simple routine which is very easy once you get used to it), and I have learned the little nuances of the machine programs and the milk foaming sorts of issues that anyone can have (most of the issues with improper milk foaming were only because I wasn't really keeping it properly cleaned!) it is a wonderful addition to our daily life.

I make Cappuccinnos every morning now without all of the usual crazy routine of trying to steam the milk manually with a steam wand (which is what most machines have attached) and usually getting LOUSY results. Now every morning they are perfect! I can also make my wife a Cappucinno, and make myself a cup of regular coffee every morning without any real hassle. It only takes a few minutes (after I figured out the routine to clean the milk circuit on the machine easily and quickly after the morning Cappuccinnos it made it really easy).

When we have friends over for dinner, it is also very easy to make all sorts of drinks (even a few decafs) to fit every person's preference. ( and they always turn out perfect!)

Since the machine is progammable, it was easy for me to set it up to our drink taste preferences, and easy to adjust the volumes to make the drinks fit into our favorite size cups for different types of coffee drinks. (my wife has a different type cup for every kind of drink, I think)

Also, I love STRONG coffee, and it makes the best cup of morning coffee I have ever tasted, without all of the fooling around with the "making the pot of coffee in the morning" routine and mess.

It has definately made our lives more enjoyable, and easier every day. And....I bet I have saved a lot of money not buying things at Starbucks on the way to work (not to forget the time and frustration saved by not standing in line at Starbuck's) since we can make whatever we want every day at home!

Again, I think the money spent was well-spent and will save us enough to make it a real bargain in the long run. This is a well made, quality machine that is easy to learn to use, and easy to get excellent results from in a short amount of time. I would strongly recommend this type of Saeco machine to anyone.

I have owned this machine since 3/'04 (!)and thought about getting a new model w/coffee maker. After shopping for a new machine and reading the reviews on this one, I must add my 2 cents. I have figured out how to avoid problems others have had with it and I am very happy with mine. In fact I will not upgrade because the others (w/ coffee maker)are not pump driven unless you spend a fortune. Here is what I do for a great latte: Turn on machine first thing. It takes about 2-3 minutes for mine to warm up and the light to turn on. While waiting for that, I get my milk out and pour it in my mug, and then fill the basket with coffee. I then turn on the frother and run it into the empty frothing pitcher. For some reason, it spits out water first before the steam gets there. Before that, I used to wonder why my drinks were watered down. So I then steam my milk right in my mug. It works great if you put it just below the surface of the milk. Then I shut off the steam and hit the espresso button and make the coffee. I pour the espresso through the milk. Perfect every time! I did buy the Delonghi burr grinder and it works perfect but I love Illy coffee so sometimes use that too. I only wish the espresso machine had a bigger basket and made more at one time. The pump is a little noisey, but at least it has a pump! BTW, mine does not leak and have had no problem with the washer (yet). Delonghi does have a terrible website and poor customer service.

I received this as a gift for Christmas 2005 after doing quite a bit of research on Amazon and other sites. I was looking for an entry level pump espresso unit that was inexpensive. I just didn't want to spend 0 plus until I'm making one every day. I had a steam machine in the past (Mr. Coffee) and I was not impressed with the taste, so I stopped using it and eventually gave it away. I just got done with trying out this model and I can recommend it as a good buy (so far). My comments are almost all positive.

Pros:
1. I'm just a regular guy NOT hired by anyone and I have no incentive whatsoever for you to look favorably on this machine. I did a lot of research and I just want to help others make a good choice. I think I made one with this unit.
2. Great price for a pump machine.
3. Steamer works great. As good as high-end machines I have used.
4. Water reservoir is large enough for 3-4 drinks. Not too bad.
5. Small. Doesn't need much counter space. Available in white which is pretty rare.
6. Made decent shots after some tweaking (see below). The "tweaking" I had to do is my major gripe.

Cons:
1. I just started using it, so this review is not "complete"
2. Grounds easily got up into the head in a short time, so cycling the pump to blow it out is a must. I'm not sure how this compares to higher-end machines.
3. Shot temperature were too low initially. Out of the box, when I first warmed up the machine and draw the first shots (even after the ready light was on) the shots were coming out too cold. Even I, a relative beginner, armed with my thermometer (bought it at Starbucks) figured that out. Initially, I measured shot temperatures that were around 120-135 deg. F, much too low to pull a decent shot. I made two adjustments to help raise the temperature. First, I loosened the adjustment screw on the filter/strainer to allow more water flow (instructions indicate you should adjust this for flow but don't allude to temperature). I also started waiting a little longer than the "ready" light indicated before pulling a shot. With these changes, temperatures went up toward 150-160 F or more which is what you want. It also seemed to help by drawing a few quick "water only" shots while monitoring the temperature. Once the temperature got up to the 150-160 range, I then added coffee to the strainer and proceeded to pull two nice shots. Time will tell if these procedures will be necessary in the future. I will modify the review if this changes.

So, I gave this machine 4 stars because I had to do some adjusting to bring up the shot temperature and the instructions could have done a better job addressing shot temperature issues. After figuring it out, the shots came out real nice with crema, you know all the blah, blah, blah the paid reviewers like to add (all I care about is taste, which was good). The steaming was trouble-free. Other than the grounds needing to be frequently flushed out of the head, it's very easy to clean so there's no major complaint there. I needed to cycle the pump with water only a few times more than I would have liked to flush out the head. I used Starbucks espresso ground in my Starbucks blade grinder. It worked just fine. Maybe someday I will try pods. I bought all the accessories at Starbucks after finding out 4 other stores didn't have what I needed. I do have to hand it to Starbucks on doing a good job of stocking everything you need to make your own. I tried to circumvent them, but it was futile!

This machine is half the price of a Starbucks Barista machine (which my semi-pro barista friend tells me is excellent). So, if money is no object, I just saw a Barista at Starbucks "on sale" for 0 and you should get that. If money IS important, I can't imagine getting a better entry-level pump machine for this price (0). I requested the white model to match existing counter items(you know, please the wife). Of course, that's the one she bought me... Big surprise. I like the fact it has a small footprint because we have limited counter space (one of the main reasons I bought it besides the low price). I may even convince my wife to let me keep it on the counter 24/7. I think the black model goes for or less, an even better bargain. Good luck.

I see I'm alone in this, but I quite enjoy my Briel Spacesaver. Never had any problems with it. I know it is not completely metal. For the price it looks high end. To get all metal I would paid over ,000.00. I can always depend on my machine when I make coffee for friends and my daughter enjoys making espresso. She is a barista in Dean and Deluca in NYC and she says it works like the commerical machines at work. So I can't complain. I am very satisfied.

Have had this machine for about a week and a half now. In our terms that is about 50 triple shot lattes. It has performed perfectly thus far. It does everything automatically. All you have to do is decide how many times to press the button for espresso shots, and then foam your own milk. It grinds, packs, and pressurizes for a perfect espresso shot every time. The steam wnad produces a fantastic micro bubble foam. Do not let the foam or milk go above the black plastic tip into the rubber handle area of the steam wand, as it will stop foaming properly. You simply have to move the pitcher back down to the plastic tip area and the foam starts forming porperly again.

It takes a little playing around with the settings to get it exactly the way you want it. One thing that seemed odd to me, and I have never owned an espresso machine, mush less an automatic: use the minimum volume setting for a plain espresso shot. Increasing volume only makes the machine pour hot water after the espresso shot has been poured, I guess creating a coffee.

Water reservoir holds plenty of water, about a liter. Discard bin for the grounds goes about 6 or so shots worth of grounds. It is probably the only complaint I have. I have to clean out the machine once a day since we do more than 6 shots a day. I suppose it is a function of making the machine as compact as possible.

Thus far it has been a great machine, and if anything changes my mind I will update this review. The orange in the picture here is fairly accurate. It is a pretty machine, and as I have grown tired of stainless steel, and do not like black appliances because they show every bit of dirt, it has been the right choice for us.

Well so far this machine has been great for the price, while the espresso isn't great it makes a fairly good mocha. It isn't a 3 or 5 hundred dollar machine, let's face it it wasn't even .00. I usually spend .00 or .00 a week on mochas so if I get even 6 months out of it will will have paid for itself several tiimes over. If you are looking for Starbucks either go to Starbucks or get yourself a 0.00 machine but if you are looking for a fairly good mocha or cappucino then give it a try.

Six months ago, my wife and I were at Macy's at the Glendale Galleria in Glendale, California looking to replace our 20 year old Braun coffee maker. Knowing of the Krups reputation and seeing a cool, blue, round, "digitized" analog clock on the demo unit, impulse buying got the better of us. Programming and using the KM-1000 was an intuitively obvious dream. The first pot - and six months of pots - of various Trader Joe's coffees have been wonderful...after we figured out that to return the carafe to the unit, you have to tilt the carafe backwards slightly to reduce the contact angle of the carafe lid and the filter basket.

But...after about 3 months, what looked like a calcium deposit began to form on the surface of the heating plate. No biggie. However, when it got bigger and bigger, closer examination revealed that the dark brown coating was coming off exposing the base metal underneath. The tech folks at Krups had never had any calls about it nor had the folks at California Electric which is one of the Krups factory authorized service centers. Fortunately, Macy's has a 180-day return policy so this afternoon it was returned.

Bottom line: Because the KM-1000 makes superb coffee, is a joy to use, and looks good just sitting on the counter top (the water reservoir looks like a translucent, semi-circular fish tank), I only hope that the coating problem was an isolated incident. Although you never see the coating failure unless you remove the carafe, if you're a perfectionist like me...

UPDATE: The replacement unit is vastly superior! Krups has totally redesigned the carafe. The pouring spout is much larger and now wedge-shaped making the dripping problem when pouring (I didn't mention that earlier) a thing of the past. Also, either the carafe lid and/or the filter holder has been redesigned such that I no longer have to tilt the carafe to return it to the heading pad. A call to Krups confirmed the redesign. With all new products, employees also test the unit and their comments are noted. However, it's only when customers call in with the same complaints/observations, that manufacturing changes are made. It looks like Krups actually listens to its customers. I would now give the unit a 5-Star rating.

This is, indeed, the "dream machine" for making espresso at home, especially where counterspace is at a premium and appearance matters. The machine, which has a small footprint compared to most others, is so beautiful it practically qualifies as sculpture. It makes championship espresso--I prefer its semi-automatic mechanism (you decide how much water per shot) to the fully automatic machine I have elsewhere. With the "pressure" portafilter (the only one I use) there is ample crema. Only complaints: the steam wand is quite short and the all-important steam hole (keep it just at the milk's surface for maximum foam)is a bit hard to see; and the resevoir does not hold as much water as some machines'(though it's very easy to fill).

Hint: this machine works better if you make the espresso first, then steam the milk. The machine is so solid and well built that it takes forever for the temp to drop back to coffee level after it has heated to steam level.

You won't be sorry you bought this machine. Every time you look at it (especially in this wonderful orange color) it will make you happy.

It does not matter weather there is a thermoblock or a brass components. My thermometer heats up past the required espresso mark. My espresso has a lot of crema. My latte's are great, cappuccinos are foamy and the cleanup is easy. I love this machine.

Mr. Coffee Steam Espresso and Cappuccino Maker - ECM150 Review

Over the past several months, I have thoroughly enjoyed this espresso maker. I bought it to replace my Krups pump espresso maker that served me well, but leaked water after 18 months. I was initially skeptical of the low price and the steam espresso maker (instead of the pump style). I now use it daily to make either coffee or latte.

To make espresso, I use espresso grined coffee beans and stop the machine after a small amount drips down. To make coffee, I use regular ground coffee and let the coffee fill up the glass container. The steam makes good espresso and does make better coffee than the coffee that I'm used from drip coffee makers. The frother works quite well and is easy to clean, compared to the more expensive Krups Espresso maker. (Tip: heat up the milk in the microwave first for faster and more foam).

Unless you're an espresso connoiseur, which I am not, this machine should serve you well. And the price is right!

I've had an F9 for about 4 years now and have used it almost daily with no problems. Recently, it had become so sluggish something had to be done (intermittent error code). Assuming it just needed to be cleaned I dug-in and quickly discovered I was in over my head - I can fix most things, but this machine is complex and quite a piece of engineering. I've not had a lot of success with repairs of this type, but thought I'd give it a go before it became junk. I stuck it back together and made a call. Repair center tells me 0 bucks fixes anything, they pay all shipping (we live in Hawaii and shipping can be an eye opener). Not expecting much, off it goes. Arrives back at my door in about a month. Have been using it for two months now and it works like new. So... expensive, but great product that is reliable and serviceable. I'd do it again.

While I respect the previous review I'm sure it was a bad unit from the line. I have had a number of these machine and this is the best expresso machine I've ever used and the steam pump works without flaw. If you in the market, I'd give this serious consideration. I'm quite happy with this purchase.

After each brew, excess water is automatically discharged to a drip tray to ensure better temperature control and superior taste in subsequent cups.
